Hempcrete is one of the few genuinely carbon-negative building materials: the woody core of the hemp plant (hurd) mixed with a lime binder and water, cast into breathable, insulating walls. It sequesters carbon for the life of the building, resists mold and fire, and regulates humidity beautifully. The one thing it doesn't do is hold the building up.
How it's built
Hempcrete is non-structural, it's cast or sprayed around a load-bearing frame (usually timber) as insulating infill, or made into blocks. Hemp hurd is mixed with a lime-based binder and tamped into formwork around the frame, then left to cure. Because it's a frame-plus-infill system, hempcrete pairs with, rather than replaces, a structural method.
What it costs
Hempcrete runs $$$, the hemp and lime aren't expensive, but it's labor-intensive to place, suppliers are still limited in many regions, and you're also paying for the structural frame it wraps. Expect a premium over conventional insulation, offset by energy performance and its environmental profile. (Approximate; supply-dependent.)

How hard is it to build?
The hempcrete itself is fairly forgiving to place, but buildability hinges on two supply questions: can you source hemp hurd and the right lime binder locally, and can you build the structural frame it needs? It's a moderate-skill method that a competent builder can execute, but it's a two-part system, not a one-shot wall. In the humid tropics its humidity-regulating, mold-resistant nature is genuinely attractive, a real advantage over most insulation, which the tropics tend to punish. The honest caveat: insulation is a bigger deal in cold climates than hot-wet ones, so hempcrete's biggest selling point (thermal insulation) is somewhat less critical near the equator, where its mold/humidity behavior becomes the main draw.
