Standing-seam and metal-panel roofs: the tropical front-runner. Reflects heat, sheds rain fast, holds through hurricanes, and lasts 40 to 70 years. Here's what it costs and why it wins.

Metal is the roof most people in the tropics end up wishing they had bought. It outlasts asphalt by decades, it shrugs off the wind speeds that peel other roofs open, and it does not care about rain. The argument against it has always been the price, and this year the price got worse. Here is what it costs now, what you get for it, and the arithmetic that decides whether the premium pays.
Two kinds of metal roof
Almost every argument about metal roofing is two people describing different products.
Exposed-fastener panels are screwed straight through the face of the sheet into the structure. Cheap, fast, and covered on our corrugated roofing page. Each screw is a hole sealed by a rubber washer, and those washers age.
Standing seam works differently. Panels clip to hidden fasteners and lock to each other along raised vertical seams. Nothing penetrates the weather surface. That is the entire premium, and it buys two things: no washers to fail, and room for the panel to expand and contract in tropical heat without working its own fixings loose.
What standing seam costs
Budget $12 to $15 per square foot installed in most markets, with specialist coastal work quoted higher. Against architectural asphalt at $3.50 to $12, that is 1.7 to 2.5 times the upfront cost.
Time your purchase if you can. The Associated General Contractors reported that in January 2026 the producer price index for aluminium mill shapes jumped 33% against the year before, with steel mill products up 20.7% — the steepest rises since 2022. That flows straight into panel prices.
One more warning worth heeding: a standing seam quote from a general roofer and one from a metal specialist can differ by 30 to 40%, and the difference shows up in the work. Get bids from people who fit this specific system.
The fifty-year maths
Comparing roofs on install price is the mistake. Compare them on how many times you buy one.
Buy asphalt three times and you have spent metal money anyway, plus three sets of tear-off, disposal and scaffolding, plus three chances for the job to be done badly.

Why it survives the wind
Standing seam holds 180 mph while architectural asphalt is rated to 130 and basic three-tab to 60 or 70. The reason is mechanical rather than clever.
Shingles are nailed. Standing seam clips to screws. Screws have far greater pull-out strength than nails, so when wind lifts at the edge of the roof there is more holding it down. The interlocking seam then removes the leading edge that wind needs to get underneath in the first place. A shingle roof fails progressively, peeling from one corner. A locked seam gives the wind nothing to start on.
Two caveats before you commit. Underlayment matters as much as the panel — a beautiful metal roof over a poorly sealed deck will leak worse than an old shingle roof that was detailed correctly. And near the coast, specify aluminium or properly coated steel. Standard steel panels within reach of salt spray will disappoint you.

Not with a reflective coating and insulation underneath. Bare uninsulated sheet radiates heat into the rooms below, which is what gives metal its reputation. A coated standing seam roof over proper insulation performs well in the tropics.
What about salt air?
Specify aluminium or coated steel within a few kilometres of the coast. Plain steel panels corrode near salt spray no matter how good the install. This is the one spec decision worth overriding your builder on.

They will say yes. Quotes from a general roofer and a metal specialist can differ by 30 to 40%, and the work differs more than the price does. Ask how many standing seam roofs the crew has finished, and ask to see one that is five years old.
