Casi todas las listas de Bocas están escritas por alguien que estuvo cuatro días. Esta está escrita desde el lado del que se queda, que es un punto de vista distinto: te importa menos cuál playa sale mejor en foto y más cuál sigue siendo buena en noviembre, cuánto cuesta de verdad una vez sumados los botes, y qué se siente como turismo sobre rieles.

Almost every Bocas list is written by someone who was there four days. This one is written from the staying side, which is a different vantage: you care less about which beach photographs best and more about which one is still good in November, what it really costs once the boats are added up, and what feels like tourism on rails.

The honest total for all three, boats and fees included, lands around $140 to $180 a person. That isn't expensive for the Caribbean, but it's a long way from the "the beaches are free" people assume before they arrive.

Cuál vale el boteWhich one is worth the boat

Cayos Zapatilla es el que recomendaría si solo haces uno. Es el baño más confiablemente calmo del archipiélago y el mejor snorkel, con arrecife alrededor, rayas y tiburones nodriza. La contra: no hay bares ni restaurantes, así que llevas todo. Esa contra es también por qué sigue estando bien.

Cayos Zapatilla is the one I'd pick if you only do one. It's the most reliably calm swim in the archipelago and the best snorkelling, ringed by reef, with rays and nurse sharks. The downside: no bars, no restaurants, so you carry everything. That downside is also why it's still good.

Red Frog es la única playa del lado exterior con servicio completo: sillas, comida, tablas de alquiler. Se siente menos llena que Playa Estrella simplemente porque hay más espacio.

Red Frog is the only outer-side beach with full service: chairs, food, boards to rent. It feels less crowded than Starfish purely because there's more room.

Playa Estrella vale la pena antes de las 11 de la mañana, cuando el agua está clara. Después se llena y pierde bastante de lo que la hizo famosa.

Starfish Beach is worth it before 11am, when the water is clear. After that it fills up and loses much of what made it famous.

La lluvia cambia la respuestaThe rain changes the answer

Bocas es húmedo casi todo el año. Las ventanas más secas suelen ser febrero–marzo y septiembre–octubre, y son también cuando el agua está más clara para bucear y hacer snorkel. Fuera de ellas, el lado abierto puede estar turbio y con corriente, y un tour de snorkel se convierte en un paseo en bote caro.

Bocas is wet for most of the year. The drier windows are usually February to March and September to October, and those are also when the water is clearest for diving and snorkelling. Outside them, the open side can be cloudy with current, and a snorkelling tour becomes an expensive boat ride.

La regla práctica en temporada de lluvia: quédate en agua protegida por arrecife. Zapatilla funciona todo el año y Playa Estrella temprano también. Y pregunta el estado del agua el mismo día antes de pagar un tour, no la semana anterior.

The practical rule in the wet season: stay in reef-protected water. Zapatilla works year round, and Starfish early does too. And ask about water conditions the same morning before you pay for a tour, not the week before.

Bucear y hacer snorkelDiving and snorkelling

Bocas es un destino de buceo cómodo más que espectacular, y eso es un elogio si estás aprendiendo. El agua es cálida todo el año, hay operadores en Bocas Town, y los sitios protegidos por arrecife son tranquilos: buenos para certificarte o para volver al agua después de años sin bucear.

Bocas is a comfortable dive destination rather than a spectacular one, and that's a compliment if you're learning. The water is warm year round, there are operators in Bocas Town, and the reef-protected sites are calm: good for getting certified, or for getting back in the water after years out of it.

Lo que vas a ver: peces tropicales, rayas y con suerte tiburones nodriza, que son inofensivos y hacen la inmersión. Lo que no vas a ver: los muros y la visibilidad de 40 metros de otros destinos caribeños. Quien llega esperando Bonaire se va decepcionado, y no es culpa de Bocas.

What you'll see: tropical fish, rays and with luck nurse sharks, which are harmless and make the dive. What you won't see: the walls and the 40-metre visibility of other Caribbean destinations. People who arrive expecting Bonaire leave disappointed, and that isn't Bocas's fault.

La visibilidad manda, y la visibilidad depende de la temporada. En las ventanas secas de febrero–marzo y septiembre–octubre el agua se aclara. Fuera de ellas, reserva con un operador que te diga honestamente cómo está el agua ese día en vez de venderte la salida igual.

Visibility rules, and visibility follows the season. In the drier windows of February to March and September to October the water clears up. Outside them, book with an operator who will tell you honestly how the water is that day rather than selling you the trip regardless.

El parque de Bocas Town. Suena a nada y es donde realmente pasa la vida de la isla: gente en las bancas al final de la tarde, el cambio del pueblo cuando se van los botes del día. Si estás evaluando vivir aquí, siéntate ahí un par de horas. Te va a decir más sobre Bocas que cualquier tour.

The plaza in Bocas Town. It sounds like nothing and it's where the island's life actually happens: people on the benches late in the afternoon, the way the town changes once the day boats leave. If you're weighing living here, sit there for a couple of hours. It'll tell you more about Bocas than any tour will.

El surf, que es la temporada al revésSurfing, which runs on the opposite season

Bocas tiene una escena de surf real y funciona en contra de todo lo demás de esta nota: las mejores olas llegan cuando el agua está más movida, o sea justo cuando el snorkel deja de valer la pena. Diciembre a marzo es la ventana fuerte, con un repunte alrededor de junio y julio.

Bocas has a real surf scene and it runs against everything else in this note: the best waves arrive when the water is roughest, which is exactly when snorkelling stops being worth it. December to March is the strong window, with a bump around June and July.

La consecuencia práctica para planear: si vienes por surf, vienes en la ventana de agua turbia. Si vienes por arrecife, vienes en la ventana de mar plano. Casi nadie consigue las dos en el mismo viaje, y las guías que te prometen ambas cosas en la misma semana no las escribió alguien que vive aquí.

The practical consequence for planning: if you come for surf, you come in the cloudy-water window. If you come for reef, you come in the flat-sea window. Almost nobody gets both on one trip, and guides that promise you both in the same week weren't written by someone who lives here.

Los Ngäbe-Buglé, que estaban aquí primeroThe Ngabe-Bugle, who were here first

El archipiélago no es solo un destino de playa. Es territorio con presencia indígena Ngäbe-Buglé, el pueblo originario más numeroso de Panamá, y buena parte de la tierra y la vida de las islas se entiende mal si se ignora eso.

The archipelago isn't only a beach destination. It's territory with a Ngabe-Bugle indigenous presence, Panama's largest Indigenous people, and a good deal of the islands' land and life makes no sense if you ignore that.

Hay comunidades que reciben visitantes, y visitarlas con un guía de la propia comunidad es distinto a que te lleven en un tour donde la gente es paisaje. La diferencia se nota rápido: en la primera hay conversación y el dinero se queda ahí; en la segunda hay fotos.

There are communities that receive visitors, and going with a guide from that community is different from being taken on a tour where people are scenery. The difference shows fast: in the first there's conversation and the money stays there; in the second there are photographs.

Comer, y la vida nocturna sin adornosEating, and the nightlife without decoration

La comida en Bocas Town es mejor de lo que un pueblo de este tamaño debería sostener, porque hay suficientes extranjeros quedándose como para mantener cocinas ambiciosas abiertas. Vas a encontrar buen pescado, cocina caribeña con leche de coco, y una cantidad desproporcionada de comida italiana y de Medio Oriente hecha por gente que llegó de vacaciones y no se fue.

The food in Bocas Town is better than a town this size should be able to sustain, because there are enough foreigners staying to keep ambitious kitchens open. You'll find good fish, Caribbean cooking with coconut milk, and a disproportionate amount of Italian and Middle Eastern food made by people who arrived on holiday and never left.

La vida nocturna es real y es chica. Hay noches fijas por bar y todo el mundo las sabe, así que en la práctica el pueblo entero se mueve junto de un lugar a otro según el día de la semana. Para algunos eso es encantador y para otros es exactamente el problema. Si estás evaluando vivir aquí, es un dato relevante: la escena social es una sola, y vas a ver a la misma gente.

The nightlife is real and it's small. Bars have fixed nights and everyone knows them, so in practice the whole town moves together from one place to another depending on the day of the week. For some people that's charming and for others it's precisely the problem. If you're weighing living here, it's relevant: there's one social scene, and you will see the same people.

Los delfines, y qué hacer cuando llueveThe dolphins, and what to do when it rains

Bahía de los Delfines aparece en todos los tours y merece una nota honesta. Hay delfines residentes de verdad. También hay, en temporada alta, demasiadas lanchas rodeando al mismo grupo de animales, y eso ni es agradable de ver ni es bueno para ellos.

Dolphin Bay appears on every tour and deserves an honest note. There genuinely are resident dolphins. There are also, in high season, too many boats circling the same group of animals, which is neither pleasant to watch nor good for them.

Si vas, ve temprano y con un operador que apague motor y mantenga distancia. Los hay, y cobran lo mismo. Si el tuyo persigue, es la señal de que elegiste mal y vale la pena decirlo, porque en un pueblo chico ese tipo de comentario circula y cambia comportamientos.

If you go, go early and with an operator who cuts the engine and keeps distance. They exist, and they charge the same. If yours chases, that's the sign you chose badly and it's worth saying so, because in a small town that kind of comment circulates and changes behaviour.

Y para el día que llueve sin parar, que va a llegar: la ciudad tiene cafés decentes con techo, un par de lugares con buena comida donde se pasa la tarde, y los operadores de buceo dan clases de teoría bajo techo. La alternativa local, que es la que recomiendo, es sentarse en un porche a ver llover con alguien que lleve años aquí. En Bocas eso no es matar el tiempo; es bastante de lo que la gente vino a buscar.

And for the day it rains without stopping, which will come: the town has decent cafés with roofs, a couple of places with good food where an afternoon passes easily, and the dive operators run theory sessions indoors. The local alternative, and the one I'd recommend, is sitting on a porch watching it rain with somebody who's been here years. In Bocas that isn't killing time; it's a fair amount of what people came for.
