Empecemos por el error que le cuesta un vuelo a más gente que cualquier otro: los vuelos a Bocas no salen de Tocumen. Salen de Albrook, el aeropuerto pequeño del centro de la ciudad, oficialmente Marcos A. Gelabert. Están a unos 22 kilómetros el uno del otro. Si llegas en un vuelo internacional y reservaste el tramo a Bocas asumiendo que era la misma terminal, tienes un taxi por delante y probablemente poco tiempo.

Start with the mistake that costs more people a flight than any other: flights to Bocas don't leave from Tocumen. They leave from Albrook, the small downtown airport, officially Marcos A. Gelabert. The two are about 14 miles apart. If you're arriving on an international flight and booked the Bocas leg assuming the same terminal, you have a taxi ahead of you and probably not enough time.

Puerta a puerta son unas 11 horas contra 1 hora del avión, por una diferencia de unos $40. Vale la pena si el bus nocturno también te ahorra una noche de hotel. No vale la pena si llegas destrozada al primer día.

Door to door that's about 11 hours against the flight's one, for a difference of roughly $40. Worth it if the overnight bus also saves you a hotel night. Not worth it if you arrive wrecked for your first day.

En qué isla conviene aterrizarWhich island to land on

Casi todo el mundo llega a Isla Colón porque ahí está el aeropuerto, y para una primera visita es lo correcto: el pueblo, el hospital, los bancos, los supermercados y los botes hacia todas partes salen de ahí. Si tienes dos o tres noches, quédate en Colón y sal en el día.

Almost everyone lands on Isla Colón because that's where the airport is, and for a first visit that's right: the town, the hospital, the banks, the supermarkets and the boats to everywhere else all leave from there. If you have two or three nights, base on Colón and go out by day.

Si te quedas una semana o más, vale la pena dormir al menos una noche fuera de Colón, en Carenero, Solarte o Bastimentos. No por la vista. Porque es la única forma de saber qué se siente depender del bote a las nueve de la noche, con lluvia, cuando ya no hay tanto tráfico. Esa sensación es la que decide si podrías vivir aquí, y no aparece en un tour de día.

If you're staying a week or more, it's worth sleeping at least one night off Colón, on Carenero, Solarte or Bastimentos. Not for the view. Because it's the only way to learn what it feels like to depend on the boat at nine at night, in the rain, when the traffic has thinned. That feeling is what decides whether you could live here, and it doesn't show up on a day tour.

Colón, Carenero, Bastimentos y Solarte están a cinco o diez minutos unas de otras en taxi acuático. El mínimo para no residentes es de unos $5 por persona en casi cualquier salto. Efectivo, siempre. Y acuerda el precio antes de subir, no al llegar.

Mucha gente llega a Bocas desde el Caribe sur de Costa Rica, no desde Ciudad de Panamá. La ruta es Puerto Viejo o Cahuita hasta Sixaola, se cruza a Guabito, y de ahí a Almirante para tomar la lancha. Es directo, y tiene cinco detalles que arruinan el día si no los sabes.

Plenty of people arrive in Bocas from Costa Rica's southern Caribbean rather than from Panama City. The route is Puerto Viejo or Cahuita to Sixaola, cross into Guabito, then on to Almirante for the boat. It's straightforward, and it has five details that ruin the day if you don't know them.

• El impuesto de salida de Costa Rica son $8, y conviene pagarlo en línea antes. En el kiosco del borde se paga con un recargo de un dólar.
• Costa Rica's exit tax is $8, and it's worth paying online in advance. At the kiosk on the border it costs a dollar more.
• Migración de Panamá casi siempre pide prueba de salida, y a veces evidencia de $500 en fondos. Ten el boleto de regreso a mano antes de llegar a la ventanilla.
• Panama immigration almost always asks for proof of onward travel, and occasionally evidence of $500 in funds. Have the return ticket ready before you reach the window.
• Panamá está una hora adelante. Este es el error clásico: la gente calcula la última lancha en hora costarricense y llega tarde a Almirante.

• You can't take a rental car across. You park in Sixaola near the bridge in a guarded lot for about $5.

Del lado panameño hay vans compartidas esperando en el borde que van a Almirante por unos $10 por persona, en cerca de una hora. Los conductores son insistentes y te van a decir que si tomas bus público pierdes la última lancha. A veces es verdad y a veces es venta. Si cruzaste antes del mediodía tienes margen de sobra.

On the Panamanian side there are shared vans waiting at the border that run to Almirante for about $10 a person, in roughly an hour. The drivers are pushy and will tell you that if you take the public bus you'll miss the last boat. Sometimes that's true and sometimes it's a sale. If you crossed before midday you have plenty of margin.

Panamanian domestic flights use small aircraft and baggage is taken seriously in a way that surprises people arriving off international flights.

• Air Panama permite 18 kg por maleta, con un máximo de 158 cm lineales. Pasado eso son $5 por kilo adicional hasta 25 kg por maleta.
• Air Panama allows 18kg per bag, with a maximum of 158 linear cm. Beyond that it's $5 per additional kilo up to 25kg per bag.
• El exceso viaja según haya espacio. Si el avión va lleno, tu maleta sale en el siguiente vuelo. Esto es real y pasa.

• The overhead bin is tiny, in height and in depth. A standard international carry-on frequently doesn't fit.

Lo que esto significa si vienes a instalarte y no de vacaciones: no traigas la mudanza en avión. Sale mucho mejor mandar lo pesado por tierra hasta Almirante y cruzarlo en lancha, o comprarlo en David y subirlo, que pagar sobrepeso vuelo tras vuelo.

What this means if you're coming to settle rather than on holiday: don't bring the move by plane. It works out far better to send heavy things overland to Almirante and bring them across by boat, or buy them in David and bring them up, than to pay excess flight after flight.

Moverte una vez que llegasteGetting around once you're there

En Isla Colón casi nadie alquila carro, y no porque no se pueda. Es que el pueblo es caminable de punta a punta y el resto de la isla se resuelve mejor de otra forma.

On Isla Colón almost nobody rents a car, and not because you can't. It's that the town is walkable end to end and the rest of the island is better solved another way.

• Bicicleta. La forma estándar. Se alquila por día o por semana a precio bajo, y llega a Bluff y a la mayoría de las playas del norte por el camino de la costa.
• Bicycle. The standard method. Rented by the day or the week for very little, and it reaches Bluff and most of the northern beaches along the coast road.
• Taxi terrestre. Barato dentro del pueblo, unos pocos dólares, y la forma sensata de llegar a las playas lejanas con equipo o bajo lluvia.
• Land taxi. Cheap within town, a few dollars, and the sensible way to reach the far beaches with gear or in the rain.
• Taxi acuático. Para todo lo que no está en Colón. Mínimo unos $5 por persona por salto, efectivo, precio acordado antes de subir.
• Water taxi. For anything not on Colón. Minimum about $5 a person per hop, cash, price agreed before you board.
• Scooter. Existe, y el camino de la costa hacia Bluff tiene tramos con arena y baches que lo hacen menos divertido de lo que suena.
• Scooter. Available, and the coast road toward Bluff has sandy, potholed stretches that make it less fun than it sounds.

Un detalle que agradece quien llega con maletas: del aeropuerto al muelle de taxis acuáticos son cinco minutos caminando, pero con equipaje pesado bajo lluvia los $2 del taxi son el mejor dinero que vas a gastar en el viaje.

One detail anyone arriving with luggage appreciates: the airport to the water taxi dock is a five-minute walk, but with heavy bags in the rain the $2 taxi is the best money you'll spend on the trip.
