El primer año, sin folleto. La moneda que se te come el presupuesto, la Caja que no es opcional, y qué cuesta más que en casa.
The first year, without the brochure. The currency that eats your budget, the Caja that isn't optional, and what costs more than it did at home.
Llevo años construyendo casas para gente que llega desde Estados Unidos, y hay un patrón: la parte que temen no es la que les cuesta. Temen la seguridad, el idioma, la comida. Lo que realmente les desordena el primer año es el tipo de cambio, un porcentaje obligatorio de salud que no habían presupuestado, y una carpeta de documentos que hay que rehacer.
I have spent years building houses for people arriving from the United States, and there is a pattern: the part they fear isn't the part that costs them. They worry about safety, language, food. What actually disrupts the first year is the exchange rate, a mandatory health percentage they hadn't budgeted for, and a folder of documents that has to be redone.
La moneda es la diferencia estructuralThe currency is the structural difference
Costa Rica usa el colón. Tu pensión llega en dólares y tu alquiler, tu súper y tu luz están en colones, así que el tipo de cambio se sienta entre tu ingreso y tu vida. El colón se ha fortalecido bastante frente al dólar en los últimos años, y eso significa que muchos estadounidenses vieron encogerse su presupuesto real sin que nada local cambiara de precio.
Costa Rica uses the colon. Your pension arrives in dollars and your rent, your groceries and your power bill are priced in colones, so the exchange rate sits between your income and your life. The colon has strengthened considerably against the dollar in recent years, which means plenty of Americans watched their real budget shrink without a single local price changing.
Esto corta en ambas direcciones: un colón débil te daría un aumento. Pero planear un retiro con ingreso fijo suele tratarse de quitar varianza, no de aceptar una apuesta de dos lados. Es la razón principal por la que alguna gente termina eligiendo Panamá, que usa el dólar directamente.
This cuts both ways: a weak colon would hand you a raise. But planning a retirement on a fixed income is usually about removing variance rather than accepting a two-sided bet. It's the main reason some people end up choosing Panama, which uses the dollar outright.
La Caja no es opcional y no es gratisThe Caja isn't optional and isn't free
Todo residente legal debe inscribirse en la Caja, el sistema público de salud, y la contribución se calcula sobre el ingreso que declaras, normalmente entre 7 y 11 por ciento. Para una pareja con $3,000 al mes eso son unos $200 a $300, que es un renglón real y no un redondeo.
Every legal resident must enrol in the Caja, the public health system, and the contribution is assessed on the income you declare, typically between 7 and 11 percent. For a couple on $3,000 a month that's roughly $200 to $300, which is a real line item rather than a rounding error.
Lo que compras con eso es certeza: cobertura universal, sin exclusión por condiciones preexistentes y sin límite de edad. Lo que no compras es velocidad. Las citas de especialista no urgentes y la cirugía electiva pueden esperar meses. Por eso casi todos los extranjeros corren los dos sistemas: la Caja debajo para lo catastrófico, y efectivo o un seguro privado para lo que no quieren esperar. Una consulta privada ronda los $60 a $90.
What you buy with it is certainty: universal coverage, no pre-existing condition exclusions, no age limit. What you don't buy is speed. Non-urgent specialist appointments and elective surgery can wait months. Which is why nearly every foreigner runs both systems: the Caja underneath for catastrophic cover, and cash or a private policy for anything they don't want to wait for. A private consultation runs about $60 to $90.
Los trámitesThe tramites
La palabra se aprende rápido. La burocracia costarricense es lenta de una forma que no es hostil, simplemente es. Los expedientes se arman despacio, las citas se agendan lejos, y las oficinas regionales de San José, Liberia y Limón no van al mismo ritmo.
You learn the word fast. Costa Rican bureaucracy is slow in a way that isn't hostile, it simply is. Files come together slowly, appointments are scheduled far out, and the regional offices in San Jose, Liberia and Limon do not move at the same pace.
Los documentos extranjeros necesitan apostilla del estado o la agencia federal que los emitió, y los documentos con vigencia, como el récord policial, suelen tener que estar dentro de los seis meses el día que presentas, no el día que los recogiste. La gente junta el expediente completo, espera la cita, y tiene que rehacer la mitad.
Foreign documents need an apostille from the US state or federal agency that issued them, and time-sensitive documents such as a police record usually must be within six months on the day you file, not the day you collected them. People assemble the full file, wait for the appointment, and have to redo half of it.
Hazlo desde Estados Unidos antes de volar. Desde acá es lento y caro; desde tu propio estado cuesta muy poco.
Do it from the United States before you fly. From here it's slow and expensive; from your own state it costs very little.
Qué cuesta más de lo que esperabasWhat costs more than you expected
- Los carros. Los impuestos de importación hacen que un vehículo usado cueste bastante más que en Estados Unidos. Esto sorprende a todo el mundo.
- Cars. Import duties make a used vehicle cost considerably more than it would in the United States. This surprises everyone.
- Electrónica y electrodomésticos. Mismo motivo. Trae lo que puedas en la maleta.
- Electronics and appliances. Same reason. Bring what you can in your luggage.
- Comida importada. Lo que comes en casa está bien de precio. La marca gringa específica que extrañas, no.
- Imported food. What people here eat is well priced. The specific American brand you miss is not.
- Los pueblos de playa. Guanacaste está tarifado para turistas, no para residentes. Puede costar el doble que el interior por la misma vida.
- The beach towns. Guanacaste is priced for tourists, not residents. It can cost double the interior for the same life.
Y lo que cuesta genuinamente menos: la mano de obra, la fruta y la verdura de temporada, la atención médica privada pagada en efectivo, y el impuesto de propiedad, que es 0.25 por ciento anual del valor registrado.
And what genuinely costs less: labour, seasonal fruit and vegetables, private medical care paid in cash, and property tax, which is 0.25 percent of registered value annually.
La parte que sí es tan buena como dicenThe part that is as good as advertised
Los 180 días sin visa. Es inusualmente generoso y cambia por completo cómo deberías tomar la decisión. Puedes venir, vivir en un lugar concreto durante media temporada de lluvia, y solicitar residencia desde adentro. Casi nadie lo aprovecha: deciden en un viaje de dos semanas en febrero, que es el mes que menos se parece al resto del año.
The 180 days visa free. It's unusually generous and it completely changes how you should make this decision. You can come, live in one specific place through half a green season, and file for residency from inside the country. Almost nobody uses it: they decide on a two-week trip in February, which is the month least like the rest of the year.
El banco, y la trampa circularThe bank, and the circular trap
Este es el trámite que más gente subestima. Costa Rica es genuinamente difícil para abrir cuenta si eres turista. La SUGEF, el regulador, aplica reglas antilavado estrictas, y los bancos revisan el capital extranjero con lupa. La mayoría pide residencia legal, aunque el Banco de Costa Rica ha permitido cuentas a no residentes desde 2016 con documentación adicional.
This is the piece of admin people most underestimate. Costa Rica is genuinely difficult for opening an account as a tourist. SUGEF, the regulator, enforces strict anti-money-laundering rules, and banks scrutinise foreign capital closely. Most require legal residency, though Banco de Costa Rica has allowed non-resident accounts since 2016 with extra documentation.
Muchos propietarios quieren ver una cuenta bancaria local antes de firmarte un alquiler. Y muchos bancos quieren ver un comprobante de domicilio local antes de abrirte la cuenta. Esa es la trampa, y agarra a casi todo el mundo.
Plenty of landlords want to see a local bank account before signing a lease. And plenty of banks want proof of a local address before opening the account. That's the trap, and it catches almost everyone.
Se rompe con un alquiler de corto plazo primero, un recibo de servicios a tu nombre, o un contrato firmado que el banco acepte como comprobante. Lo importante es saber que existe antes de aterrizar con dos maletas y un plan de dos semanas.
You break it with a short-term rental first, a utility bill in your name, or a signed lease the bank will accept as proof. What matters is knowing it exists before you land with two suitcases and a two-week plan.
Lo que necesitas tener listo: pasaporte o cédula DIMEX si ya tienes residencia, comprobante de domicilio, comprobante de ingreso, y estados de cuenta de tu banco de origen. Y prepárate para preguntas detalladas sobre el origen de los fondos. No es personal, es cumplimiento. La cuenta de ahorros es lo más accesible al llegar; la cuenta corriente con chequera normalmente pide residencia temporal.
What to have ready: passport or DIMEX card if you already have residency, proof of address, proof of income, and statements from your home bank. And be ready for detailed questions about the source of your funds. It isn't personal, it's compliance. A savings account is the most accessible thing on arrival; a chequing account with a chequebook normally requires temporary residency.
Sin cuenta local no accedes a SINPE Móvil, el sistema de pagos nacional que aquí usa todo el mundo para todo, desde el taxi hasta la verdulería. Ese solo detalle hace más por integrarte a la vida diaria que cualquier otra cosa administrativa.
Without a local account you can't access SINPE Movil, the national payment system that everybody here uses for everything, from the taxi to the vegetable stall. That single detail does more to fold you into daily life than any other piece of admin.
Manejar, y por qué mucha gente deja de hacerloDriving, and why a lot of people stop
Puedes manejar con tu licencia de tu país mientras tu sello de entrada esté vigente. Una vez que eres residente necesitas licencia costarricense, y el trámite incluye examen médico y, según el caso, teórico.
You can drive on your home licence while your entry stamp is valid. Once you're a resident you need a Costa Rican licence, and the process includes a medical exam and, depending on the case, a written test.
Lo que nadie te dice es que bastante gente termina manejando menos de lo que planeaba. Las carreteras principales están bien; las secundarias en temporada verde son otra cosa, con baches que aparecen en una semana y tramos sin iluminación. Manejar de noche bajo lluvia en una ruta rural es la actividad más riesgosa que hace un extranjero promedio aquí, muy por encima de cualquier preocupación de seguridad personal.
What nobody tells you is that plenty of people end up driving less than they planned. The main highways are fine; the secondary roads in the green season are another matter, with potholes that appear in a week and unlit stretches. Driving at night in the rain on a rural route is the riskiest thing the average foreigner does here, well above any personal safety concern.
El corolario para elegir dónde vivir: un pueblo donde puedas caminar a lo esencial vale bastante más de lo que parece en el papel, sobre todo si el plan es envejecer ahí.
The corollary for choosing where to live: a town where you can walk to the essentials is worth considerably more than it looks on paper, especially if the plan is to grow old there.
Hacer amigos, que es el trabajo real del primer añoMaking friends, which is the real work of the first year
La parte que decide si te quedas no es logística. Es si a los ocho meses tienes con quién cenar un martes. Y eso no pasa solo, sobre todo si llegas en pareja, porque una pareja se basta a sí misma justo lo suficiente para no salir a buscar gente.
The part that decides whether you stay isn't logistics. It's whether at eight months you have someone to have dinner with on a Tuesday. And that doesn't happen by itself, especially if you arrive as a couple, because a couple is self-sufficient just enough not to go looking.
Lo que funciona, en orden de efectividad según lo que veo: aprender español aunque sea mal, porque duplica el conjunto de gente disponible y cambia cómo te trata el pueblo. Meterte a algo que se repita semanalmente, sea voluntariado, un deporte o un coro. Y elegir el barrio pensando en caminabilidad, porque los encuentros casuales son la infraestructura social que un carro elimina.
What works, in order of effectiveness from what I see: learning Spanish even badly, because it doubles the pool of available people and changes how the town treats you. Joining something that repeats weekly, whether volunteering, a sport or a choir. And choosing the neighbourhood for walkability, because casual encounters are the social infrastructure a car removes.
Qué traer y qué comprar aquíWhat to bring and what to buy here
La regla es directa y ahorra miles: trae lo que sea caro por aranceles y liviano de transportar. Compra aquí lo que sea barato de producir localmente o carísimo de enviar.
The rule is simple and saves thousands: bring anything expensive because of duties and light to carry. Buy here anything cheap to produce locally or brutally expensive to ship.
- Trae: electrónica, herramientas buenas, ropa técnica, medicamentos específicos, lentes de repuesto, y cualquier cosa de marca que uses religiosamente.
- Bring: electronics, good tools, technical clothing, specific medications, spare glasses, and anything branded you use religiously.
- Compra aquí: muebles, colchones, cerámica y textiles, y prácticamente toda la comida. Enviar muebles al trópico además significa enviar algo diseñado para otro clima.
- Buy here: furniture, mattresses, ceramics and textiles, and essentially all food. Shipping furniture to the tropics also means shipping something designed for a different climate.
- No traigas: nada de madera aglomerada. La humedad tropical lo destruye en un par de años y las mudanzas están llenas de muebles que llegaron para morirse.
- Don't bring: anything made of particleboard. Tropical humidity destroys it within a couple of years, and moves are full of furniture that arrived to die.
Sobre las mascotas: Costa Rica es razonable con perros y gatos, y el trámite pide certificado veterinario reciente, vacunas al día y el papeleo del país de origen. Lo que sorprende es la logística aérea, no el permiso: pocas aerolíneas aceptan animales en bodega en ciertos meses por calor, así que la fecha del vuelo puede depender de tu perro. Empieza ese trámite antes que casi cualquier otro.
On pets: Costa Rica is reasonable about dogs and cats, and the process asks for a recent veterinary certificate, up-to-date vaccinations and paperwork from the origin country. What surprises people is the airline logistics rather than the permit: few carriers accept animals in the hold during certain months because of heat, so your flight date can end up depending on your dog. Start that process before almost any other.
Si el primer año te va bien aquí normalmente es por dos cosas: presupuestaste el tipo de cambio y la Caja de verdad, y elegiste el pueblo después de vivir en él, no antes. Lo demás se resuelve.
If your first year goes well here it's usually for two reasons: you budgeted the exchange rate and the Caja honestly, and you chose your town after living in it rather than before. The rest sorts itself out.
