La pregunta que más me hacen es "¿cómo es la comunidad extranjera en Panamá?", y la respuesta honesta es que esa pregunta no tiene una respuesta. Hay cuatro comunidades y comparten poco más que el pasaporte. Alguien feliz en Boquete probablemente odiaría Bocas, y viceversa.

The question I get most is "what's the expat community like in Panama?", and the honest answer is that the question doesn't have one answer. There are four communities and they share little beyond a passport. Someone happy in Boquete would probably hate Bocas, and the reverse.

Boquete: la más organizadaBoquete: the most organised

Es la más grande y, más importante, la más fácil de entrar. Décadas de llegadas han dejado infraestructura social real: grupos de caminata, clubes de jardinería, obra de caridad, intercambios de idioma, teatro comunitario. Para alguien que llega solo o recién enviudado, eso no es un detalle. Es la diferencia entre mudarse y aislarse.

It's the largest and, more importantly, the easiest to enter. Decades of arrivals have left real social infrastructure: hiking groups, gardening clubs, charity work, language exchanges, community theatre. For someone arriving alone or recently widowed, that isn't a detail. It's the difference between moving and isolating.

El clima ayuda: entre 15 y 25 grados todo el año, sin aire acondicionado y sin calefacción. La gente sale, y una comunidad donde la gente sale funciona distinto a una donde todos se encierran con el aire prendido.

The climate helps: between about 58 and 78 Fahrenheit all year, no air conditioning and no heating. People go outside, and a community where people go outside works differently to one where everybody stays in with the air conditioning on.

Coronado: la playa con hospital cercaCoronado: the beach with the hospital nearby

En el cinturón de playa del Pacífico, a una hora de Ciudad de Panamá. Ese detalle define a quién atrae: gente que quiere playa pero no quiere estar a seis horas de un hospital serio. Es más caro que el interior, hace calor y necesitas aire acondicionado todo el año, y la comunidad se organiza alrededor del club, el golf y la playa más que alrededor de clubes de voluntariado.

On the Pacific beach belt, an hour from Panama City. That detail defines who it attracts: people who want the beach but don't want to be six hours from serious medical care. It's pricier than the interior, it's hot and you'll run air conditioning year round, and the community organises around the club, the golf and the beach rather than around volunteering groups.

Ciudad de Panamá: profesionales, no jubiladosPanama City: professionals, not retirees

La capital atrae a un extranjero distinto: gente que trabaja, monta empresas, o quiere hospitales de primer nivel a minutos en vez de a horas. Cuesta bastante más, entre $3,500 y $5,000 al mes para una pareja, y a cambio tienes una ciudad de verdad y la mejor medicina del país en Punta Pacífica.

The capital draws a different foreigner: people who work, start businesses, or want top-tier hospitals minutes away rather than hours. It costs considerably more, $3,500 to $5,000 a month for a couple, and in exchange you get a real city and the best medicine in the country at Punta Pacifica.

Si tienes una condición médica seria, esta es la conversación honesta. La atención fuera de la capital y David es genuinamente delgada, y ninguna vista compensa eso.

If you have a serious medical condition, this is the honest conversation. Care outside the capital and David is genuinely thin, and no view compensates for that.

Bocas: la más joven y la más pasajeraBocas: the youngest and most transient

La comunidad más pequeña y con mayor rotación, inclinada hacia gente más joven, dueños de negocios y quienes vinieron por el agua. Se hacen amigos rápido y también se van rápido, lo cual es liberador para algunos y agotador para otros. Lo escribimos aparte en la nota sobre bienes raíces en Bocas.

The smallest and highest-turnover community, weighted toward younger arrivals, business owners and people who came for the water. You make friends fast and they leave fast too, which is liberating for some and exhausting for others. We wrote about it separately in the note on Bocas real estate.

Los dos pueblos de los que nadie escribeThe two towns nobody writes about

David y Volcán son las opciones más baratas del país para un extranjero y casi no aparecen en las listas. David es una ciudad panameña real con el hospital regional adentro, por $1,800 a $2,400 al mes para una pareja. Volcán está más alto y más fresco que Boquete, con más terreno por el dinero.

David and Volcan are the cheapest options in the country for a foreigner and they barely appear on any list. David is a real Panamanian city with the regional hospital inside it, at $1,800 to $2,400 a month for a couple. Volcan is higher and cooler than Boquete, with more land for the money.

Lo que sacrificas en los dos es exactamente lo de arriba: comunidad en inglés. Si tu español funciona, o estás dispuesto a que funcione, son el mejor valor de Panamá y no está cerca.

What you give up in both is exactly the above: the English-speaking community. If your Spanish works, or you're willing to make it work, they're the best value in Panama and it isn't close.

El banco, que aquí es más fácilThe bank, which is easier here

Una diferencia práctica con Costa Rica que casi nadie compara: Panamá es más accesible para abrir cuenta siendo extranjero. Se puede tanto siendo residente como no residente, y en algunos casos se puede estructurar el trámite a distancia a través de un intermediario con relación bancaria local.

A practical difference with Costa Rica that almost nobody compares: Panama is more accessible for opening an account as a foreigner. It's possible both as a resident and a non-resident, and in some cases the process can be structured remotely through an intermediary with a local banking relationship.

Dicho eso, no es automático. Después de los Panama Papers el marco regulatorio se apretó mucho, y los bancos analizan el perfil, la actividad económica y tu conexión con el país. Te van a pedir pasaporte, referencias bancarias, comprobante de ingreso y documentación del origen de los fondos, normalmente traducida al español. Algunos bancos rechazan solicitudes de no residentes sin explicar por qué.

That said, it isn't automatic. After the Panama Papers the regulatory framework tightened considerably, and banks analyse your profile, your economic activity and your connection to the country. They'll ask for a passport, bank references, proof of income and documentation of the source of funds, usually translated into Spanish. Some banks decline non-resident applications without explaining why.

Si eres estadounidense, asegúrate de que el banco cumpla FATCA y prepárate para firmar los formularios correspondientes. El mejor predictor de éxito, en los dos países, es un expediente de origen de fondos limpio y completo. La gente a la que le va mal casi siempre llegó con documentación a medias.

If you're American, make sure the bank is FATCA compliant and be ready to sign the corresponding forms. The best predictor of success, in both countries, is a clean and complete source-of-funds file. The people it goes badly for almost always turned up with half the documentation.

El ritmo de temporada, que cambia el puebloThe seasonal rhythm, which changes the town

Algo que solo se nota viviendo: las comunidades extranjeras de Panamá respiran. Boquete y Coronado se llenan en la temporada seca, aproximadamente de diciembre a abril, cuando vuelven los que pasan solo el invierno del norte. Después se vacían.

Something you only notice by living here: Panama's foreign communities breathe. Boquete and Coronado fill up in the dry season, roughly December to April, when the people who only spend the northern winter here come back. Then they empty out.

Eso significa que el pueblo que visitaste en febrero, con restaurantes llenos, eventos todas las semanas y gente en la calle, no es el mismo pueblo en septiembre. Para algunos el vacío es un alivio. Para otros, sobre todo para quien llegó buscando comunidad, los meses de lluvia con medio pueblo fuera son la parte dura del año.

Which means the town you visited in February, with full restaurants, events every week and people on the street, is not the same town in September. For some people the emptiness is a relief. For others, especially anyone who came looking for community, the rainy months with half the town away are the hard part of the year.

Es una razón más para el mismo consejo: pasa una temporada de lluvia completa antes de comprar. No solo por el clima, sino para ver cuánta gente queda.

It's one more reason for the same advice: spend a full rainy season here before buying. Not just for the weather, but to see how many people are left.

Cómo se conoce gente, en concretoHow you actually meet people

La pregunta práctica detrás de todo esto es cómo se entra a una comunidad, y la respuesta es más mecánica de lo que parece.

The practical question behind all of this is how you get into a community, and the answer is more mechanical than it looks.

• Algo semanal y fijo. Un grupo de caminata, un club de jardinería, voluntariado, un coro. La repetición es lo que convierte conocidos en amigos, y una sola cosa semanal supera a diez eventos sueltos.
• Something weekly and fixed. A hiking group, a gardening club, volunteering, a choir. Repetition is what turns acquaintances into friends, and one weekly thing beats ten one-off events.
• Voluntariado con organizaciones locales, que además te pone en contacto con panameños y no solo con extranjeros. Es la vía más rápida para dejar de vivir en la mitad importada del pueblo.
• Volunteering with local organisations, which also puts you in contact with Panamanians rather than only foreigners. It's the fastest way to stop living in the imported half of the town.
• Clases de español, que sirven dos veces: aprendes el idioma y conoces a otros recién llegados en tu misma situación.
• Spanish classes, which do double duty: you learn the language and you meet other new arrivals in the same situation.
• Llega en temporada baja si puedes. Suena contraintuitivo, pero en septiembre la gente que queda es la gente que vive aquí, y tiene mucho más tiempo para conocerte que en el febrero lleno.
• Arrive in low season if you can. It sounds backwards, but in September the people still around are the people who live here, and they have far more time for you than in a crowded February.

El español, con expectativas realistasSpanish, with realistic expectations

Casi todo el mundo llega diciendo que va a aprender español y una minoría lo hace. La razón no es la edad ni el talento, es que en Boquete y Coronado se puede vivir sin él, y lo que no es necesario no se sostiene.

Almost everyone arrives saying they'll learn Spanish and a minority do. The reason isn't age or talent, it's that in Boquete and Coronado you can live without it, and what isn't necessary doesn't stick.

Lo que veo funcionar: clases desde el primer mes, no desde el sexto, cuando ya te acomodaste en la burbuja. Y buscar deliberadamente una situación donde el español sea obligatorio, sea un intercambio semanal, una actividad con panameños, o simplemente comprar siempre en el mismo lugar del pueblo hasta que la conversación pase de transacción a charla.

What I see working: classes from the first month, not the sixth, once you've settled into the bubble. And deliberately finding a situation where Spanish is obligatory, whether a weekly exchange, an activity with Panamanians, or simply always shopping at the same place in town until the conversation moves from transaction to chat.

El nivel que cambia tu vida aquí es más bajo de lo que crees. No necesitas fluidez. Necesitas poder resolver un problema con un plomero, entender lo que dice un médico y hacer una broma. Con eso el país entero se comporta distinto contigo, y es alcanzable en un año de esfuerzo moderado.

The level that changes your life here is lower than you think. You don't need fluency. You need to be able to resolve a problem with a plumber, understand what a doctor says, and make a joke. With that the whole country behaves differently toward you, and it's reachable in a year of moderate effort.

Y la razón menos sentimental para hacerlo: en cualquier negociación, alquiler, obra o compra de terreno, entender lo que se dice cuando no te están hablando a ti es información. Los extranjeros que negocian mejor aquí son casi siempre los que aprendieron el idioma.

And the least sentimental reason to do it: in any negotiation, a lease, building work, a land purchase, understanding what's said when nobody is speaking to you is information. The foreigners who negotiate best here are almost always the ones who learned the language.

The advice I always give: rent for a year in one specific town before buying anything. A community feels different from inside, and it's the one thing on this list you cannot assess on a visit.
